Why lead-acid batteries can’t just go to the nearest scrap dealer, and how to sell a UPS battery bank the right way.
Every UPS room eventually retires its batteries. A mid-size office can have hundreds of kilograms of lead-acid batteries on steel racks, and when the office moves or the UPS is replaced, those batteries need to go somewhere. Here is how to do it properly.
Why batteries need special handling
Most UPS and inverter batteries are lead-acid — sealed (SMF/VRLA) or flooded tubular types. They contain lead and sulphuric acid. When they are broken open informally to recover lead, the acid and lead dust contaminate soil and harm the people doing the work. That's why the law treats them differently from ordinary scrap.
What the rules say, in plain terms
India's Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022 replaced the older 2001 battery rules. They put responsibility on producers to collect and recycle batteries, and they require waste batteries to be channelled to registered recyclers or refurbishers rather than informal dismantlers. For an office, the practical takeaway is simple: sell to a buyer who can show where the batteries go, and keep the paperwork.
How old batteries are priced
- Weight: dead lead-acid batteries are priced mainly by weight, because the value is in the lead.
- Type: SMF, tubular and 2V industrial cells are priced differently.
- Quantity: a full bank is easier to price well than a handful of units.
- Racks and cabling: steel racks and copper links add value.
- Condition: leaking or swollen batteries need separate containment.
Removing a battery bank safely
- Your IT or facility team shifts the load and switches the UPS off.
- The DC breaker is opened and the bank is isolated.
- Links are removed carefully, one string at a time — a battery bank can still deliver dangerous current when the UPS is off.
- Batteries are loaded upright, with damaged units kept in separate trays.

What about lithium batteries?
Newer UPS systems increasingly use lithium-ion batteries. These are handled through authorised recyclers too, and are priced case by case. Don't store damaged lithium batteries in a closed room — they can overheat.
Selling the UPS as well
If the UPS itself is being retired, sell it in the same lot. Working online UPS systems have resale value; non-working ones are bought for their copper and steel. See our used UPS buyers and old battery buyers in Delhi pages, or in Noida.
Quick questions
Can I sell old UPS batteries to any scrap dealer?
Legally, waste batteries should go to registered recyclers or refurbishers under the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022. Choose a buyer who routes them that way and gives you a receipt.
Are dead UPS batteries worth money?
Yes. Dead lead-acid batteries are bought by weight for their lead content.
